Adda: Park + Gather // Grace DeLaune

“We walked through the old quarters on a Sunday, doors shuttered for the day. The blue sky, fractured by winding tree branches and webs of cable and wire, held a quiet I thought impossible only a few feet away from the chaos of the Delhi roads. I wondered how many years this Sunday pause had brought peace to the area, how many generations of the craftsmen who lived here had perched on their stoops and balconies, sharing chai and a meal. I wondered if they minded as our group of bumbling students clattered through the streets, inquiring about layers of buildings and history America was not old enough to remember.”

This project aims to improve the connectivity of pedestrian space throughout Lodhi Market which is currently categorized by uneven, disconnected, or nonexistent sidewalks and major vehicular congestion. By redirecting cars below grade into a dedicated parking facility, the project reimagines the territory between the shops as a fully pedestrian multi-function public space. The park is designed to confront the extremes of the seasons, offering shaded areas for respite from the heat and sunken plazas that become stormwater retention basins during the monsoon season to ease pressures on the city’s fragile system.
